Spiti Valley Guide: Route, Best Time and Tips
· 1 min read · By Tripsiana Team

Spiti Valley is Himachal at its wildest: a high cold desert of ochre canyons, ancient monasteries and tiny villages near the Tibet border. Here is a practical guide.
Two Ways In
- Via Shimla and Kinnaur (the gradual route): better for acclimatisation, open most of the year, following the Sutlej through Kinnaur to Kaza.
- Via Manali and Kunzum Pass (the dramatic route): shorter but higher and only open roughly June to October.
The classic loop enters via one and exits via the other. Most circuits run 8 to 10 days.
Best Time to Go
June to October is the main season, when both routes and the Kunzum Pass are open and Chandratal is accessible. Winter Spiti (via Kinnaur only) is for hardy travellers chasing snow leopards and frozen landscapes.
What Not to Miss
- Key Monastery, the iconic hilltop gompa above the Spiti river.
- Chandratal, the crescent-shaped high-altitude lake.
- Hikkim, home to the world's highest post office; send a postcard.
- Langza, Komic and Kibber, ancient high villages with fossils and big skies.
- Chitkul, the last village in Kinnaur, on the way in or out.

Altitude and Safety
Spiti sits above 3,000 m, with passes over 4,500 m. Acclimatise gradually, ideally via the Kinnaur route, drink plenty of water and keep day one light. We build rest days into every Spiti plan and use experienced mountain drivers.
Important: Mobile network is patchy and fuel stops are far apart (Kaza has the only pump for a long way). This is a trip to leave to people who know the terrain.
