Places to Visit in Rajasthan

Jaipur

The Pink City

Jaipur

State capital

Forts, palaces & bazaars

The rose-hued capital and gateway to Rajasthan, crowned by the hilltop Amer Fort above Maota Lake. Its walled old city holds the honeycomb Hawa Mahal, the City Palace, the astronomical instruments of Jantar Mantar and the jewellery and textile bazaars of Johari and Bapu.

Udaipur

The City of Lakes

Udaipur

Mewar's capital

Lake palaces & sunsets

The most romantic city in Rajasthan, built around the shimmering Lake Pichola with its island palaces. The sprawling City Palace, the ghats and havelis, Jagdish Temple and a sunset boat ride past the Lake Palace make Udaipur the honeymoon heart of the state.

Jodhpur

The Blue City

Jodhpur

Marwar's capital

Mehrangarh Fort

The gateway to the Thar, where the mighty Mehrangarh Fort rises 400 feet over a sea of indigo-washed houses. The old city clusters around the clock tower and Sardar Market, with the marble Jaswant Thada cenotaph and fort ziplining close by.

Jaisalmer

The Golden City

Jaisalmer

Thar Desert

Living fort & dunes

A golden sandstone city rising from the desert, crowned by one of the last living forts on earth where thousands still live inside the walls. Its carved Patwon Ki Haveli, the Sam and Khuri sand dunes, camel safaris and Swiss-tent desert camps are the icons of Rajasthan.

Pushkar

Near Ajmer

Pushkar

Sacred lake town

Brahma Temple & camel fair

A holy lakeside town ringed by more than fifty ghats and home to one of the world's few Brahma temples. Its evening aarti, bohemian cafes and the vast Pushkar Camel Fair each autumn draw travellers and pilgrims alike.

Ranthambore

Sawai Madhopur

Ranthambore

National Park

Bengal tiger safaris

One of the best places in India to see a wild tiger, a rugged park of dry forest, lakes and ruins watched over by the ancient Ranthambore Fort. Morning and afternoon jeep and canter safaris across ten zones are the draw for wildlife lovers.

Mount Abu

Sirohi district

Mount Abu

Altitude: 1,220 m

Rajasthan's only hill station

The only hill station in Rajasthan, a cool green retreat around Nakki Lake in the Aravalli hills. Its exquisitely carved marble Dilwara Jain temples and the sunset point over the plains make it a gentle break from the desert cities.

Bikaner

Northern Thar

Bikaner

Camel country

Junagarh Fort

A desert city of red sandstone, built around the unconquered Junagarh Fort with its opulent painted palaces. Bikaner is known for its camel breeding farm, the curious Karni Mata rat temple at nearby Deshnok, and some of the best namkeen and sweets in the state.

Chittorgarh

Southern Rajasthan

Chittorgarh

Largest fort in India

Mewar valour

The largest fort in India by area, a vast hilltop citadel that holds the soul of Rajput valour and sacrifice. The Vijay Stambh victory tower, Rani Padmini's palace and its tales of jauhar make Chittorgarh a moving detour on the road to Udaipur.

Kumbhalgarh

Near Udaipur

Kumbhalgarh

The Great Wall of India

36 km of ramparts

A formidable Aravalli fortress wrapped in the second-longest continuous wall in the world, often called the Great Wall of India. Nearby the intricately carved Ranakpur Jain temple, with its 1,444 marble pillars, makes an unforgettable pair.

Rajasthan Travel FAQs

01

October to March is the ideal window, with warm days around 20 to 27 degrees and cool, pleasant nights that suit fort and desert sightseeing. This is also festival season, taking in the Pushkar Camel Fair and the Jaisalmer Desert Festival. Summer, from April to June, is very hot at 40 degrees and above, though it is the best time for tiger sightings at Ranthambore and brings deep hotel discounts. The monsoon from July to September turns Udaipur and the south green and is a quieter, cheaper time to travel.

02

Six to seven days covers the classic triangle of Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur comfortably, while eight to ten days lets you add Jaisalmer and the desert, or Ranthambore and Pushkar. Two weeks allows a grand loop through Bikaner, Mount Abu, Chittorgarh and Kumbhalgarh at a relaxed pace. For a first trip from Delhi, many travellers combine the Golden Triangle of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur with a few extra days deeper into Rajasthan.

03

The most popular first-timer route runs Jaipur to Jodhpur to Udaipur, giving you the Pink City forts, the Blue City and Mehrangarh, and the lakes of Udaipur in a week. Add Jaisalmer between Jodhpur and Udaipur for the desert, or start with the Golden Triangle from Delhi via Agra and the Taj Mahal. We tailor the exact routing to your entry city, interests and pace.

04

Jaipur has the main international airport, with domestic airports at Udaipur, Jodhpur and Jaisalmer for internal hops. Most travellers fly into Delhi or Jaipur and continue by private car or train. Rajasthan is very well connected by rail, including overnight trains between the major cities, and Delhi to Jaipur is a comfortable five to six hour drive on the expressway.

05

Rajasthan is one of the more visited and tourism-ready states in India and is generally safe, with our on-ground drivers and support throughout your trip. As anywhere, we recommend modest dress at temples and in smaller towns, avoiding intercity road travel late at night, and keeping to arranged transport. Our private packages are especially popular with families, couples and solo travellers who want a vetted driver and stays.

06

A comfortable private tour of the main cities typically starts around 18,000 to 30,000 rupees per person on twin sharing for six to eight days, covering a private car, three and four star stays, breakfast and sightseeing. Luxury heritage-hotel trips, desert camps and wildlife safaris cost more. We always share a clear, itemised quote up front and tailor the hotel category to your budget.

07

Yes, and it is one of the great joys of Rajasthan. Many former forts, havelis and palaces are now heritage hotels, from grand landmark stays in Udaipur and Jaipur to intimate family-run havelis in Jaisalmer and Bundi. We can build your trip around a few special heritage nights or keep it to comfortable modern hotels, depending on your taste and budget.

08

For most travellers it is a highlight. A night at a Sam or Khuri desert camp near Jaisalmer usually includes a camel or jeep ride onto the dunes for sunset, a Rajasthani dinner, folk music and dance around a bonfire, and clear desert stars. Camps range from simple to genuinely luxurious Swiss tents, and we match the standard to your comfort level.

09

Ranthambore is one of the best tiger reserves in India, but sightings are never guaranteed as these are wild animals across a large park. Doing two or three safaris across morning and afternoon slots greatly improves your chances, and summer months tend to offer the most sightings as tigers gather near water. Even without a tiger, the park is rich in deer, crocodiles, birds and the atmospheric Ranthambore Fort.

10

For the October to March season pack light cottons for the day and warm layers for cool desert nights, especially around Jaisalmer where temperatures can drop sharply after dark. Bring comfortable walking shoes for the forts, sunglasses, a hat and strong sunscreen, and modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees for temples. In summer, prioritise very light breathable clothing and sun protection, and carry plenty of water.
