Best Time to Visit Spiti Valley: A Month-by-Month Guide

Wondering when to go to Spiti? The short answer: the best time to visit Spiti Valley is September to mid-October for clear skies and the full circuit, or May to June if you want the valley quieter and both roads freshly open. But Spiti rewards very different travellers in very different seasons. Here is an honest breakdown.

The Quick Answer

  • September to mid-October — the sweet spot: clear skies, best visibility, both routes open, comfortable days.
  • May to June — roads reopen, fewer tourists, pleasant weather, some snow lingering on high passes.
  • July to August — greener landscapes but real landslide risk on the Kinnaur road.
  • November to April — winter Spiti, Shimla side only, brutally cold but empty and magical.

Peak Season: September to Mid-October

This is when Spiti looks its best. The monsoon has passed, the air is crystal clear, and the light on the Key Monastery and Chandratal is unbeatable. Daytime temperatures sit around 10 to 20°C and nights turn cold. Both the Manali and Shimla roads are open, so you can do the full loop, entering one way and exiting the other.

Book ahead: This is the most popular window, so homestays in Kaza, Langza and Kibber fill up. Lock your dates three to four weeks out.

Early Season: May to June

By mid-June the Manali road over the Rohtang and Kunzum passes has usually cleared, and the valley is quieter than in autumn. Weather is pleasant, roughly 15 to 20°C by day, with snow still clinging to the high passes for dramatic photos. Chandratal opens once Kunzum is clear, usually mid to late June.

Monsoon: July to August

The valley floor stays fairly dry because Spiti sits in a rain shadow, but the approach roads through Kinnaur are landslide-prone in these months. The landscape is at its greenest and the crowds thin, but you must build in buffer days and stay flexible. This is for travellers who can absorb a delayed road.

Winter: November to April

Winter Spiti is a different world. The Manali passes close, so the only way in is the long Shimla and Kinnaur road. Kaza drops to minus 20°C or lower, rivers freeze, and the monasteries sit under snow. This is peak snow leopard season, with organised treks out of Kibber. It is only for hardy, well-equipped travellers, but it is unforgettable.

So When Should You Go?

  • First-timers and photographers: September to mid-October.
  • Quieter valley, fresh passes: May to June.
  • Snow leopards and solitude: January to February (via Shimla).
