Himachal in Winter: Snow, Skiing & Where to Go
· 6 min read · By Tripsiana Team

Chasing snow? Himachal Pradesh in winter (December to February) is one of the best places in India for snowfall — Shimla, Manali, Kufri and Solang turn white, skiing opens at Solang and Narkanda, and the whole state takes on a cosy, festive glow. Here's what to expect and how to plan.
Where it snows
Shimla, Kufri, Manali and Solang Valley are the reliable snow zones and the easiest to reach. For heavier snow and skiing, head to Narkanda or Solang. The Atal Tunnel keeps the road to snowy Sissu and Lahaul open through much of winter.
Skiing & snow activities
Solang Valley offers beginner skiing, snowboarding, snow tubing and the ropeway; Narkanda and Kufri are gentler ski slopes. Even without skiing, there's sledging, snowman-building and snow points galore.
What to know before you go
Roads & weather: Fresh snowfall can briefly block roads (especially towards Rohtang) and delay drives. Carry chains or hire a driver experienced in snow, and keep your plan flexible.
What to pack
- Heavy jacket, thermals and fleece layers
- Waterproof snow boots and woollen socks
- Gloves, cap and sunglasses (snow glare)
- Moisturiser and lip balm for the dry cold
