Kashmir in Winter: Gulmarg Skiing, Snow & What to Expect
· 6 min read · By Tripsiana Team

Dreaming of a white Kashmir? Winter (December to February) turns the valley into a snow paradise — Gulmarg becomes one of Asia's top skiing destinations, the Mughal gardens sleep under snow, and the Dal Lake occasionally freezes. It's cold and some high roads close, but the crowds thin and the scenery is magical. Here's what to expect.
What winter in Kashmir is like
From late December, Kashmir enters Chillai Kalan — the harshest 40-day stretch of winter, when temperatures in Srinagar drop below freezing and snowfall is heaviest. Days can be crisp and sunny or thick with snow. It's a season of kangris (fire pots), kahwa tea and snug houseboats.
Gulmarg — skiing & snow
Gulmarg is the star of winter Kashmir. The Gulmarg Gondola carries skiers and snowboarders high onto the Apharwat slopes, and the resort draws powder-hunters from around the world between roughly January and March. Even non-skiers can ride the gondola, build snowmen and sledge.
Srinagar, Pahalgam & Sonamarg in winter
Srinagar stays accessible, with snow-dusted gardens and misty mornings on the Dal. Pahalgam is beautiful under snow and usually reachable. Sonamarg, however, and the high road towards Ladakh (Zoji La) are typically closed in deep winter — plan your route accordingly.
Weather note: Snowfall can briefly close roads and delay flights into Srinagar. Keep a buffer day and a flexible plan in peak winter.
What to pack
- Heavy down jacket, thermals and fleece layers
- Waterproof snow boots and woollen socks
- Gloves, woollen cap and a scarf
- Moisturiser, lip balm and sunglasses (snow glare)
- Ski gear can be rented in Gulmarg if you don't own it
Is winter right for you?
Go in winter if you want skiing, snow and a cosy, low-crowd trip and don't mind the cold. If you'd rather have blossoms, tulips or golden chinars — and open roads to Sonamarg and Ladakh — visit in spring, summer or autumn instead; our best time to visit Kashmir guide compares every season.
