Ladakh vs Kashmir: Which One Should You Visit?
· 7 min read · By Tripsiana Team

Comparing Ladakh and Kashmir? They share a state but feel like different planets. Choose Kashmir for lush valleys, lakes, houseboats and gardens — gentle, green and family-friendly at a comfortable low altitude. Choose Ladakh for a high-altitude desert adventure of turquoise lakes, ancient monasteries and dramatic mountain passes. Many travellers do both on a single Srinagar-to-Leh road trip. Here's how to decide.
Quick verdict
| Kashmir | Ladakh | |
|---|---|---|
| Landscape | Green valleys, lakes, meadows | High-altitude cold desert |
| Altitude (base) | Srinagar ~1,600 m | Leh ~3,500 m |
| Vibe | Relaxed, romantic, easy | Rugged, adventurous |
| Best for | Families, honeymoons, first-timers | Road trips, biking, monasteries |
| Season | Almost year-round (incl. winter snow) | Mainly Jun–Sep |
| Getting there | Fly to Srinagar | Fly to Leh, or road |
Altitude & how easy the trip is
This is the deciding factor for many. Kashmir sits low (Srinagar ~1,600 m), so there's no real altitude concern — it suits families with kids, elderly travellers and anyone who wants a comfortable holiday. Ladakh is high (Leh ~3,500 m, passes above 5,000 m), so altitude sickness is a genuine consideration and you must acclimatise. If it's your first Himalayan trip and you want it easy, Kashmir; if you're up for adventure and careful acclimatisation, Ladakh.
Scenery & experiences
Kashmir is the postcard of green India: shikara rides on Dal Lake, nights on a houseboat, the meadows of Gulmarg and Pahalgam, Mughal gardens and saffron fields. Ladakh trades all that green for stark grandeur — the colour-shifting Pangong Tso, the dunes and Bactrian camels of Nubra Valley, hilltop monasteries like Thiksey and Hemis, and the thrill of crossing Khardung La.
Best time to visit
Kashmir works almost year-round — tulips in spring, cool green summers, golden autumn, and snow (plus skiing at Gulmarg) in winter. Ladakh is essentially a summer destination: June to September, when the passes to Nubra and Pangong are open. Which should you choose?
- Pick Kashmir if: you're travelling with family or elderly parents, want a relaxed or romantic trip, prefer green scenery, or are nervous about altitude.
- Pick Ladakh if: you want adventure, biking and monasteries, and Pangong/Nubra are on your bucket list — and you're willing to acclimatise.
Why not both?
The classic combination is to start in Srinagar, enjoy Kashmir, then drive the spectacular Srinagar–Leh highway (via Kargil) into Ladakh — which also acclimatises you gradually as you climb. Allow 10–12 days to do both justice. If you're weighing Ladakh against another high-altitude desert instead, read our Spiti vs Ladakh comparison.
